Lettuce seed heads full of aphids
Dang, the backyard lettuce seed heads are full of aphids, so I might just not collect any lettuce seeds this year.

First lettuce harvest of the year; chard will be soon; kale are small
The lettuce, which is all in the three grey rectangular planters, have sprung and are looking great! Took a first harvest today, with falafel.
The chard aren't far behind.
The kale are looking pretty puny still -- the slugs have a clear preference for them over the chard (they share a bed). I think the kale will get there though.

Hardies have been transplanted into yard
Today I transplanted these into the yard:
- broccoli x 3 (all piracababa) -- with double-layer of tulle
- kale (all dwarf vates) x 9 in north bed and x ~3 or 4 in with the broccolis -- with double-layer of tulle
- chard (all fordhook) x 9 in north bed -- with double-layer of tulle
- green onions x ~5 in with the broccolis -- with double-layer of tulle
- lettuce (Ruby and romaine) -- all the long grey rectangular containers
Left over of the above plants, that can go into gaga later on:
- broccoli x 2 or 3
- kale
- chard
- onions

First lettuce harvest -- from indoor-sown/raised on March 12th! Kale slow and didn't start enough?
Thursday, March 16, 2023
Wow -- the March 12th seeds are all a-popping! Potted up, including WS some kales and chards

Kale, chard, lettuce, forget-me-not, and coreopsis started in PT
Started lots of seeds today, all in PT. For the kale, once sprouted it will be mostly-all outside (inside at night) because kale never grows well inside for me for some reason.
Kale:
- Vates Blue Curled (a new-to-me variety this year in the hopes that it will be a shorter variety, so easier to keep under tulle without touching the tulle re: white cabbage moth)
- White Russian
Chard:
- Barese (a new-to-me variety this year in the hopes that it will be a shorter variety, so easier to keep under tulle without touching the tulle re: white cabbage moth)
- Fordhood (old faithful)
Coreopsis (new-to-me plant; seeds from veganic Ferme de l'Aube)
Lettuce (I rarely used to start lettuce indoors, but it's so slow to grow outside in cool spring weather so will try giving it a head start this year):
- Romaine (Paris)
- Ruby Leaf
- Black Seeded Simpson

Chards semi-flopped from cold; will cover from tonight's snow
Last night wasn't particularly cold -- minus 5 -- but today the central bed's chards are semi-flopped and didn't bounce back during the day. So, did a potentially-final? harvest.
Snow is coming tonight/tomorrow (5 to 10 cm) so just for fun I decided to cover the chards (and the mini late-sow lettuce). Placed a tall fence over them then simply draped the blue curtains over the chards (including the ones against the west house, which haven't flopped yet) and a sheet over the lettuce.

Birds eating lettuce seeds from the plant
Saw sparrows (house, I think) having a buffet of lettuce seeds from the Ruby plants I let flower. I've collected a good amount of seeds already; happy to share.

Sowed lettuce (Romaine "Paris Island Cos"), radishes ("Cherry Belle"), and forget-me-nots in north bed
Wednesday, August 3, 2022
"Cos Lettuce Mix" and "Baby Pak Choi" scattered in central bed's south part
Just to use up the rest of these random seeds.
Didn't even scratch them in -- will see if they take care of themselves.

Lettuce started for fall crop (direct-sowed)
Sprinkled a bunch of 2021's Black Seeded Simpson, scratched it in, watered it, and covered with plastic.

Ruby leaf lettuce lasts longer than Black Seeded Simpson
The BSSs have mostly started to climb up toward bolting, but all of the Rubies are still low. Maybe grow less BSS next year, and more Ruby.
So, harvested most of the BSS, letting a few grow to seed.
