First hard/killing frost in the yard last night

The massive volunteer cherry tomato by the hydro meter is mostly kaput now, along with any other remaining tenders.

First frost was last night

It has been a mild fall until now -- got some cooler nights at the 0 +1 range, but no frost in the yard until last night when it went down to -4.  The tenders are now done.  --> Edited to add that actually the stevias are still looking fine even after several cold nights!!

First frost was last night (first in my yard)

Alas, the one zucchini plant I hadn't pulled yet was clearly struck down by frost last night, as was one of the volunteer ground cherry plants.

The zinnias and stevias are still looking good -- as surprisingly is the buckwheat (and of course the cool-weather things like chard, celery, and carrots).

There had been definite frosts outside of the yard (with ice on cars, on the grass on the hill, etc.), but until now the yard seemed to have escaped it.

FIRST FROST in my yard was last night -- tenderest plants kaput

The forecast for cold nights a few days ago didn't quite materialize -- but last night's ~-4 was a definite frost in the yard, officially the first frost in my yard.

The tomato and zucchini plants, and the tuberous begonia, are all wilty/dead now.  The zinnias, however, seem to be fine still (tired / end of season, but not frosted).

I was worried about the chard and celery, as they looked droopy first thing this morning, but they bounced back during the day.  I threw a blanket over them for tonight as it will be going down to ~-5, so hopefully this will help.

The fall sown potted lettuce and kales look good too, but I covered them for tonight as well just in case.  It would suck if they go mushy before I have to chance to harvest anything from them!

Yup, first frost has come and gone

Tuberous begonia is completely kaput now, whereas it was still standing upright a few days ago. I think that plant is my best judge, as the zinnias are clearly unhappy/dying but didn't droop over. Kept the tuber of course.

First frost, sort of?

I guess we've had our first frost? The volunteer ground cherry by the gate, which looked great all along, still has integrity in the stems but the leaves are all curling in and dying. The zinnias are still standing in the yard and out front, but not looking very happy at all. So maybe not the full deep killing frost yet, but a frost?

First frost was last night

Or at least, there was heavy frost on the grass and everything around.  I pulled almost all the zinnias etc. already, so I don't know for sure but pretty sure.

Still has not been frost yet (again) -- and saw praying mantis again today

More cold nights, but the zinnias are still intact so I know it hasn't been frost here yet.

Saw the praying mantis again today, still in that corner.  By later in the afternoon she was hiding / out of sight again.

Also, my hopes are pretty guarded about her eggs hatching.  It seems they lay eggs regardless whether they were fertilized or not.  I would be surprised if she had run into a male to mate with.

Still has not been frost yet

Some cold nights right down to around 0 degrees, but no frost yet.  Zinnias, Malabar, etc., everything still un-touched by frost.

First frost will probably be tonight

First frost will probably be tonight.  Harvested the almost-last Malabar spinach tonight, and some ground cherries.

==> Edited afterward to say yes, there was a light frost that did in the Malabar spinach.  Not heavy enough to bother the chard, celery, beets, or carrots.

First frost

The tomato plants finally died within the last couple of days.  Until now they were still normal and healthy looking, but now the leaves have all withered and shrunk.

No first frost yet

For the record, no first frost yet, at least not in my backyard.  Has been a very warm fall, and forecast not looking like frost for at least another week.
