GA: FOY cucumber -- several more on the way -- BUT LOOKS LIKE DISEASE MAY BE STARTING

Wow, this is the first year of my three at GA that the cukes have looked good!  Today got my first cuke.

However, some leaves at the bottom are turning brown/crispy... and some are wilting.... So I fear disease will be taking over!

Will see how many cukes I get...

(All cukes at GA are Straight 8 this year.)

GA: Cucumber plants looking good so far! Very vigorous! (All are Straight 8 variety)

The cucumber beetles are there too, but wow, the first two years at GA my cukes (Eureka) all did horrendously.  With how well these Straight 8s are looking, maybe I'll actually get a decent GA harvest of cukes this year... or will the cucumber beetles be their detriment?  I'm hopeful that the long period of being covered will help.  And they are on the vertical fence post thing again this year.

GA: Flops (partial) so far: Includes cukes, beans, watermelons, a tomatillo, and a tomato

Here are the flops at GA so far -- at least they're just partial flops at this point:

- Cukes:  3 or 4 of the little transplants died, no idea why.  Could there be a cutworm?  I don't have pencil crayons with the cukes.

- Watermelon:  Thinking I'd be smart and start from seed onsite rather than transplants (since last year most of the transplants went kaput within a day or two of transplanting) -- well, not having great results with the pre-sprouted seeds.  Next year, plant 2 or 3 PSSs per location!

- Beans:  WTH!?!  Some of the new pops look diseased or something, kaput!

- Tomato:  One wimpy transplant went kaput, not really surprised.

- Tomatillo:  One wimpy transplant went kaput, not really surprised.

FOY cucumbers! ** Finally ** (allotment)

The allotment cukes were the first to give a harvest.  2 harvested today.

Sadly, no tomatoes to go with them!!

Started in PT: cucumber, watermelon, cantalope summer squash, winter squash (forgot to buy butternut)

Started a bunch of seeds in PT today -- some of these will be for the yard, some will be for gaga:

- Cucumber:  Eureka
- Zucchini:  8-Ball
- Zucchini:  Golden Glory
- Zucchini:  Dark Green
- Summer squash:  Golden Scallopini
- Watermelon:  Blacktail Mountain
- Cantalope:  Hales Best Jumbo (from the foil packet collection)
- Winter squash:  Jumbo Pink Banana (used up the last of the foil packet seeds)
- Winter squash:  Cushaw White

I forgot that I didn't have any butternut squash seeds, so I will buy some and definitely grow that too.

Cucumbers almost all dead -- died quickly over the past week

The leaves crisped up, looks like some kind of disease (no wilt, just speckled and dried up / crispy).  It was a good harvest though, no complaints.  A few last cukes are on the vine, then that will be it.

First cucumber harvest! x2

First two cucumbers (Eureka) harvested!  There have been tons of male and female flowers, but I haven't tried hand-pollinating and apparently the critters haven't been doing much of it either.  But anyway one or two a week is plenty for me.

Cukes, zukes, and zinnias transplanted -- including 2 zukes in pots

For the cukes (all Eureka, 6 of them, consisting of 4 from round 1 and 2 from round 2 for staggering the harvest),  and zukes (7 in ground (3 8 Ball and 6 Golden Glory) and 2 in big pots*), amended with lots of mrp, semi-lots of azomite, and some kelp.  Oh and for a few of the zukes I did add some alfalfa but not a lot.  Also put some of the freezer rabbit poop in with most of the zukes, but not the pair... oh which pair.... I think not the SW-most pair.  Or was it not the pair in the central bed.... Ah well.

Didn't amend the zinnias with anything.

* 2 of the zukes (both Golden Glory) are in big pots.  The soil in these consisted of a mix of garden bed soil and a mix of my potting mix (peat, ProMix, lime, kelp, mrp, azomite, and a small amount of alfalfa).  I've never had success with potted zucchinis before -- the plants have always been wimpy and never produced anything -- so I'm curious for this year, now that I have bigger pots and lots of mrp and azomite in there.

Mulched most of the things with the last of last fall's basement mulched leaves.

Undecided which of the zukes I won't tulle.  For sure I'll tulle at least 6 of the 7 in ground.  I may also try tulling the potted ones and the hydro bed one while they're relatively small at least.

Started hardening the zukes, cukes, and begonia

Today was cloudy with showers, so I left them out for the whole daytime in the shade.

After these, the only thing left to harden will be the basil but I'll wait a smidge longer for that.

Zucchini and cucumbers started in PT

Zucchini will once again be Golden Glory and Eight Ball.

Cucumbers will once again be Eureka.  I'll do a round 2 of the cukes a bit later, to try to avoid having too many cukes ready all at once.

Last (probably) cuke harvested -- for total of ~5 or 6 fall cuke harvest

This cuke could have used another week or so to finish filling out, but more cold nights happening so harvested now just in case.

A couple of other cukes took, but with the cold nights are growing soooooo slowly, so I'm not sure if they'll make it.

I'd say my fall cuke experiment was a success!  A sparse/limited success, but still worthwhile.  The vines were never very healthy, but they produced.

Cuke fall crop harvest began! 61 days from sow to first harvest

One of the Eureka cucumber plants that was sowed in the pot on July 22nd, whose female I pollinated on Sep 5th, I harvested today!  That makes 61 days from sowing to first harvest.

I'm seeing at least 3 more that took, but all in the west bed, should be ready within a week or so.  The pot plants aren't looking too great, but, we'll see.

Female cucumber from fall sowing! Hand-pollinated. Will it take?

It's on one of the potted cucumber plants, all three of which are quite pale green in colour.  Hand-pollinated it with several males but as usual I can't see any cucumber pollen for the life of me.  Will see if it takes.

Fall cucumber plants have been flowering -- females only so far

... They're looking pretty good.  And bees are coming around for the buckwheat and Jasper tomato flowers, so, once some female cukes start appearing hopefully they'll get good and pollinated.

2 of the PT Eureka cucumbers transplanted to central bed temporarily

Figured I should let them get their feet under them before moving them to the north part of the west bed under the roof.

The other 2 Eureka cucumbers haven't sprouted yet, neither either of the Marketmore.

More cucumbers started in PT for fall harvest

2 Marketmore (the last two from the foil packet collection)

4 Eureka

started in PT.

Figured why not, and since only two of the in-ground seem to have made it so far.  (Though there are also the 3 in the pot...)
