First lettuce harvest of the year; chard will be soon; kale are small

The lettuce, which is all in the three grey rectangular planters, have sprung and are looking great!  Took a first harvest today, with falafel.

The chard aren't far behind.

The kale are looking pretty puny still -- the slugs have a clear preference for them over the chard (they share a bed).  I think the kale will get there though.

Finally seeing fewer slugs

What a banner year for slugs!  Easily over 1000 I rehomed, I would say.  The past few nights I've seen only a few each night, compared to the dozen+ I usually see, so maybe the colder nights have sent them away.

Slugs a'plenty still, after a summer of rehoming them!

I'm out there almost every evening with the cell phone flashlight, dropping dozens into the slug bucket to rehome them outside of the yard, and yet every next night there are still tons more -- big ones no less!  Quite amazing.

Typically find them mostly in the beans and potatoes.  Oh and under tulled chard and kale, from which I haven't been removing them because of the tulle.

Slug bucket to the rescue

Wow, so many slugs these last few days, especially now with some much needed rain after such a dry spring and early summer.  Relocating them to the plants in front of the fence.

Garden plants they've been enjoying:

- beans

- dill

- kale

- broccoli

- stevia (in-ground only)

- basil

Basil has holes.... earwigs?

The basil looks healthy but quite a lot of holes.

My guess is earwigs, otherwise slugs.

Tonight I've set out some newspaper "traps" -- moist newspaper crumpled up.  Will see if they collect anything.  Put two in the main basil bed, one in the mini bed.

Slugs eating the kale under the row cover

Lots of holes in the kale under the row cover and found some slugs while watering.  Didn't go chasing them though, whatevs.

Interestingly the kale out in the open looks unaffected by slugs.  I guess the improved air circulation plus lack of crowding is less inviting to them.

Insect report: May 28th

I will use this as a running "tally" of the various insects I've seen in my garden, mostly ones who eat the plants but a few other interesting ones as well.  For future updates I'll copy this list and build on it.

The dates indicate the first day I saw them

Lupin aphids:  May 23rd (first time I've seen these in person)
Flea beetles:  May 24th (actually I think I saw them a few days prior)
Three lined potato beetles:  May 24th
Slugs:  May 26th
Yellow wooly bear moth:  May 26th (first time I've seen one of these in person)
Clavate tortoise beetle:  May 27th (first time I've seen one of these in person)

Slugs eating Great Northern beans as they emerge -- struggling

Baby slugs all over those Great Northern beans (along the west wall), which I didn't notice until today.  Relocating the slugs, hope the beans will recover.
