First lettuce harvest of the year; chard will be soon; kale are small

The lettuce, which is all in the three grey rectangular planters, have sprung and are looking great!  Took a first harvest today, with falafel.

The chard aren't far behind.

The kale are looking pretty puny still -- the slugs have a clear preference for them over the chard (they share a bed).  I think the kale will get there though.

First lettuce harvest -- from indoor-sown/raised on March 12th! Kale slow and didn't start enough?

Wow!!  Less than one month from sowing to first harvest!  I'll definitely do indoor-started/raised lettuce in future, instead of just the outdoor sowings.

Good thing this lettuce is on the go, as the kale might be a semi-bust this year... The only indoor-raised kale is looking a bit slow and wimpy (Barese)... and the WS kales are all only barely starting to show hints of their first true leaves.

Harvested some of the fall-sown potted kale and lettuce

With a low of -9 or something like that forecasted for tonight, figured I'd better take a harvest of the fall-sown potted kale and lettuce before it goes kaput.  Clipped off the kale and one pot of lettuce, leaving the rest to grow if they dare, and for the second pot of lettuce I didn't harvest any and instead just brought it inside on the kitchen table to live there for a while.

Kale harvesting galore -- lettuce and swiss chard too

Have been harvesting lots of kale.  Chard isn't being as productive but still getting some harvests.  Tons of lettuce -- and there's no need at all to thin lettuce -- it's fine for it to be super thick, still get lots of harvest.

Lots of kale, lettuce, and chard being harvested for salads

Ok I have wayyyyyy too much lettuce.  No way in heck can I eat it all especially as I'm favouring kale and chard for their more healthiness.

Perfect amount of kale I think, with ~16 or so plants.

Good amount of chard too, with ~10 or so plants.

Making lots of salads with the Transformed Salad kit from Pure Kitchen.  For some reason though I was disappointed, the dressing lacks kick, it's kind of blah, I would have sworn it's not the same dressing as on the Transformed Salads I had, but oh well, still enjoyable.

Black Seeded Susan lettuce bolting; others not bolting yet

Still tastes good though.  Will leave one or two to go to seed.  Apparently lettuce is easy to collect seed from, doesn't cross-pollinate.

Salad harvests! (lettuce, chard, onion)

The lettuce I started March 25th is doing very well, now at the stage for picking nice baby greens (individual leaves).  The chard are also at the nice young stage for picking leaves for salad.

Lettuce out; carrots in

Harvested the leftover lettuce tonight, will it up for falafels.  There was lots of it, and even though it didn't seem to have gone to seed yet, I hadn't eaten any in a long time.  I'm just not a lettuce person, I guess!

So, in went another round of carrots.  This time I broadcasted the seeds instead of putting them in little rows that needed major thinning and still resulted in gaps here and there.  I think this way will work better, with less thinning.
