MAJOR FLOP: garlic :(

Oh man -- $50 of seed garlic.  $50!!!!!  is getting me about $5 worth of garlic.  Womp womp.

So far I've pulled the west half.   All elephants are single-cloves -- they never turned into bulbs.  Almost all regulars are itty bitty.  I mean, usable, but like $0.10 worth of garlic each.

I'm sure the other half will be similar but I'll wait a week or two to pull those.

I have no idea what went wrong.  I've grown garlic in the yard before with good, or at least decent, results.  In past years they scaped nicely, etc.  Oh well!

Yard carrots a total flop -- won't do another round, will just put something else there

Wow, despite all my effort with the vermiculite under/over and the corn starch gel, and covering with burlap, the yard carrots were a complete and total flop.  Not a single carrot.  So, for the first time in many, many years, I'm just not going to grow carrots in the yard.  GA will be the carrot place this year.

I'll theorize that the corn starch gel was too think and the carrots couldn't break through.  (It was a different batch of gel than the GA carrot sowing.)

Yard carrots a FLOP. Re-sowed today

Ouch, the carrots sowed in the yard on May 4th were a total flop.  Well, not total, as two did sprout, but, yeah.  So after doing the GA carrots, I came home and used the identical technique in the yard.  Fingers crossed.

Mystery: A bunch of outside zinnias gradually died -- piddly roots!

The tray of zinnias that has been going outside during the day and coming inside at night had been looking good (definitely behind the indoor zinnias but that's to be expected).  But then, over the past week or so, they've been dying!  When I pluck them out, they have almost zero roots.  I wonder if it's something with my mix -- maybe too much or too little lime or something like that?

Looks like a few shorts will survive -- hopefully....

Indoor stevia flopped due to many small flying insects! Moved outside

Yikes, tons of small flying insects!!  I had noticed one a week or two ago, didn't think anything of it.  Came back from camping and now there are so many!

So, moved all three indoor stevia outside permanently.

I wonder if they came in on the stevia that I bought -- that's my theory.  (Two of the indoors stevia were mine, one was from the store.)

The plants look happy, but no way in heck do I want to risk insects for the winter, so putting a stop to this now.

Several plants died in pots -- maybe the mix wasn't to their liking?

Writing this note late, but gradually over a period of a few weeks, several of the latest starts died in their pots.  Primarily watermelon, 8-ball zucchini, green zucchini, pink banana squash.  Golden Glory, cushaw, and butternut seemed fine.

Results of carrot experiment = [EDIT: FLOP!!!!! README] success! (and no freezing needed) -- and part b of round 2 carrots started

EDITED ON MAY 20TH 2024:  Actually, this was a total flop -- although they germinated beautifully on the plate, it looks like none have "taken" in the garden.  I've repeated this several times in recent days and so far all a flop.  I won't do this again -- too bad, because they germinate sooooo quickly this way.  Next year it will be burlap method all the way!  Though  maybe I'll try an experiment with doing 48 hours of plate, then when they go into the garden, covering with burlap.... Hmm....  worth a try!

Here was my original note when I wrote this on May 15th:

~~~
Wow!  The carrots I "sowed" on plates which went into baggies indoors 5 days ago germinated!  I'm sure they mostly germinated yesterday even (given the length of several of them already), but I hadn't checked.
The plate that had spent 24 hours in the freezer was about a day behind the plate that never went into the freezer.  I'm convinced that the freezer step serves no purpose and just wastes a day.
Today I put them all into the carrot bed, NOT by carefully transplanting one by one, but by sort of gently dispersing them around (after I re-loosed the soil).
Didn't have enough to cover the whole area, so started more in the same way today, but without the freezing of course.
Beets -- round 2 (round 1 was a TOTAL FLOP)
Wow, this is the absolute worst beet germination situation I've ever had, like, ever, I'm pretty sure.  There were MAYBE 3 or 4 max that germinated.  No idea why.  I had covered them with a light mix of vermiculate and soil, and watered frequently.
So, today I started round 2.  I did them a couple of different ways.
Both ways I started by soaking the seeds overnight.
Then, one batch I put directly into the garden, sprinkled around rather than measured/spaced out, and placed a piece of floating row cover over top.
The other batch, I sowed inside, in my homemade potting mix, using the tray that has .... 36? little compartments (that I use for lettuce for example_).  These I'll wait until they pop up and have grown a wee bit, then will transplant them the typical way.  I put 2 seeds per compartment.
My peppers are leggy and wimpy, so bought some from Ritchie's
Yeah... my started peppers all look so wimpy.  Like Charlie Brown's xmas tree.  And that's with some topping to aim for bushiness.  I'll definitely still plant them out and see how it goes, but, I needed some backups.
So, bought three kinds of seedlings from R's:
- ____x 1
- Sweet Banana x 9
- basic green pepper x 9
Allotment: Onion bulbs a flop
Yep, the onion sets I planted at the allotment hardly did anything.  Some swelled a bit, maybe doubled or tripled in size, but a long way to from being an actual onion.  Not sure if maybe the site doesn't get enough sun, or if it was some other issue.  Anyway, I'll be able to use these, but probably won't try again next year.
Allotment: Onions are officially a flop -- hardly grew much despite tops dead
Alas, my 100% failure record at growing an actual onion remains.  Figured it was worth a try at the allotment as I think it gets more sun than my yard.  But the onion sets hardly doubled in size, despite the tops being mostly all gone now.  So, plucked some of them, left a few more for now.
Oh no! Zucchini plant due to broken stem -- no evidence of SVB
The potted zucchini in the big terra-cotta-coloured container by the a/c, which had been doing really well and producing nicely, slowed down in recent days (as have all the other zukes -- I'm guessing it's generally because I have't done a mid-season amendment) -- and a few days ago I noticed it was all floppy.  At first I was sure it would be due to a SVB making it in under the tulle because I hadn't secured it all that well -- there were definitely gaps.  But -- in looking at the plant more closely, suddenly the main growing part broke right off.  I dissected it and didn't see any trace of SVB.  I think the stem broke either from me / people damaging it, or potentially from the weight of hanging down from the container.
So, removed the whole plant and will use it for the leftover bush beans -- 4 left over still in the little seedling pots from several weeks ago.
Spotty appearance of the July 23rd bush beans!!! Started more INSIDE
What the heck, I have the worst success rate with getting beans started!!  ~30% of the July 23rd bush bean sowings have popped up.  What happened to the rest of them?  Your guess is as good as mine.  They were covered with a layer of tulle for protection...
So, today started yet more bush beans (both kinds: brown-speckled and white) -- however, these I started INSIDE in the 9-trays, in pure ProMix (didn't bother doing my home-made mix for this small amount).  Soaked them in water for just a few hours before putting into the ProMix.
Daikon radishes were a full flop -- all went to seed (too hot -- I should have planted them sooner)
Pulled them all, though in retrospect should have left some go to seed for the flowers and to see what the pods are like.
Bush bean bust: Almost none of the June 8th sowings appeared! Sowed more.
So weird!  These were the bush beans I sowed in the central bed's NW corner, under the tulle with the kale.  One wimpy one appeared and is being eaten by insects; then when I dug around a little today I found a second one that has sprouted and will hopefully come up soon.
So, today I sowed replacement beans there.  (Speckled brown in the north half, white in the south half.)  Didn't pre-soak these at all.
Pulled one pepper, replaced it with potato
One of the 6-pack of peppers is doing zero growth even though I topped it, so out it came today.  Put a "Chieftain" potato in its place.  (South edge of west bed.)
The other peppers aren't looking great either but at least seem to be doing something.
NOOOOOOOOOOoooooo!!!! BIG GREEN CATERPILLAR ON THE NORTH KALE (IN BROC BED)!!!!
S/he must surely be the cabbage moth caterpillar!
HOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW?!?!?!?!?!?
I tulled the bed on April 28th, and added a second layer of tulle on May 22nd, and none of the kale/broc in this bed were anywhere near touching the tulle.
Could it be that maybe...
- I tulled too late?  Moth came along while hardening off?
- This one emerged from the soil this year from last year's life cycle type of thing???
- An egg was laid on top of the tulle, and fell down onto the plant???
OMG
Now I'm going to have a realllllly close look at all my kales/brocs............
DO I TEAR THEM ALL OUT AND PUT POTATOES!?!?!?!
TBD...
Allotment beans a total flop! Roasted under plastic?
Alas, when I removed the plastic from the allotment beans today and saw nothing, I started digging around to see if anything was about to pop out of the ground.  Well, the answer was a definite NO!  In fact, I could hardly even find any of the beans -- the ones I did find were rotting or hadn't done a thing.  I did find two that looked like they were doing something, so I put them in the NW corner of the bean section.
So, I'll need to re-start the allotment beans, will do that in a few days.
All fall broccoli a flop; pulled the one remaining flop of a plant and sowed buckwheat
Yeah, that one last plant was definitely getting nibbled at by something and was totally failing to thrive.  So, pulled it and instead sowed a bunch of buckwheat, straight from the jar, then covered lightly in soil and then with a plastic sheet.
Next year for a fall broccoli, start then in containers (with a way to also cover with floating row cover, or tulle since at that point would be small / not touching the tulle), then transplant to ground once nice and sturdy.
Thursday, September 1, 2022
Oh no!!! 3 of the 4 fall broccoli plants have been killed! (they were still skinny)
Noticed about a week ago that one of the four piracicabas that I direct-seeded a while ago had floundered, didn't think too much as 3 were still left.  Well!  Today I noticed 2 more have died!!  The stem was sliced clean through, about 1.5 inches above soil level.  Cutworm maybe!?  (As they've been always under floating row cover.)
Bummer.  One is still there... for now.  I won't bother doing anything about this, will just see if this one makes it.  But in future years, I should avoid direct seeding broccoli in favour of waiting until plants are good and sturdy before putting in the ground.
