GA: Beet harvest (wimpy)

Harvested all of the beets sown July 18th.  They never bulked up -- a lot are quite small, a few are a bit bigger, but no really good nice big ones.

The yard beets never did great this year either other than a few big ones.

Last carrots and beets harvested (have been several heavy frosts)

There have been several heavy frosts in recent weeks, so I harvested the rest of the carrots and beets.

I tried a carrot and can't say it seems any sweeter than the ones harvested through the summer.  Haven't had one of these beets yet.

But anyway, a very decent harvest of carrots and beets, though ~15% of the carrots seem to have had some kind of insect damage, so I'll have those carrots first.

2 more beets harvested

I love these beautiful miner-free leaves!  And the roots look gorgeous too.

Beets: First two harvested. Beautiful leaves!

Harvested the two biggest beets.  Even though the leaves were squished under the tulle, no sign of leaf miner on any of them at all!  (Whereas the untulled chard have lots.)

Made the beet leaf pasta sauce.  Sooooo good.

Beets ALL harvested -- not the best harvest

Due to finding a tunnel at the step from our furry visitor, harvested all the remaining beets.  Tossed the leaves because I just won't have time to do anything with them given the dog broken leg situation.  The beets themselves were definitely on the small side.  Not the best beet harvest, but then, I'm not the best beet fan either, so it's not really a bad thing.

Beet leaves have poops and holes, despite being under tulle entire time?

While harvesting three more beets today, I noticed what definitely looks like some kind of poop on the underside of some of the leaves, and there are what look like some chew damage on some of the leaves. The root parts look fine.  The beets have been under cover the entire season, so I have no idea what this could have been.  I couldn't find any actual insects.  Will just give the leaves a good rinse before using them.

Harvested a few beets (have been ready for a while)

Harvested the first three beets, now that I finally used up all of last year's beets.  Huge beets, with gorgeous leaves thanks to being under tulle the whole time.

Harvested beets, carrots, and fall-planted potatoes

Soooooo many beets, nice harvest.

Carrots once again are all small, and many are hairy.  Not particularly appealing, but, edible.

Fall-planted potatoes provided a nice little harvest actually!  2.5 pounds of baby potatoes. Not bad considering they were planted on August 8th and 22nd.

Still many beets, potatoes, and squash (and a few carrots) from last year

Last year's harvest still here:

- beets (quite a few)
- potatoes
- carrots (only a few left now)
- butternut squash (5, including 2 biggg ones...  slowly getting through them)
- jumbo pink banana squash (the 2 ginormous first harvested ones, and one relatively reasonable size)

The freezer meals are getting eaten, but still lots left.

Harvested all remaining beets and carrots

Harvested all the remaining beets and carrots, because I want to empty the beds so I can do this once-per-5-or-10-years injection of horse manure + grounded up dried leaves.

Carrots are usually a disappointing harvest, same as this year -- a lot of very short/stubby carrots.  Some nice ones too though.

Beets were good, some huge ones, a lot of nice size and some teeny ones.

Used the last of the beets today!

Wow, beets store great in the fridge.  Used the last beets today, for a pasta recipe.

In my fridge / on my table/counter right now

In my fridge / on my table/counter right now!

- tons of tomatoes, cherry and normal, some ripe, some still green
- 5.5 cups of de-husked ground cherries ready for pie
- a huge bag of swiss chard
- a huge bag of beet greens about to be made into a pasta dish
- a big bag of beets
- a sandwich bag of potatoes (puny harvest)
- several cucumbers
- a bag of celery
- a few jalapeno peppers
- one small green pepper

Still in the garden:  more chard (about half has already succumbed to the cold but some still crisp) and celery; a few more beets; maybe a few carrots but not sure if there's much root to harvest

Harvesting update

Harvesting update reflecting where things are at these days:

Zucchini:  TONS have come in already.  Probably 30-40.  Freezer really filling up.

Tomatoes:  Just starting.  A few cherry tomatoes here and there, and one large one.

Ground cherries:  Trickling in, like the cherry tomatoes.  Finding some on the ground, empty...

Beets:  Two so far, one of which was quite small.

Garlic:  Two so far, both quite small, only 4 cloves each.

Carrots:  One so far, just for fun.  Disappointingly not a good flavour, but edible.

Chard:  Haven't been harvesting much, but plants doing well.  Some were getting shaded by zucchini plant so they really stretched up and have long stalks.  Have now pulled back the zucchini leaves to give more sun to the chard.

Peppers:  A few jalapenos, which really aren't hot.  A few banana peppers.  Scooter harvested one very young and small green pepper.

Harvested 1 garlic and 1 beet

Harvested 1 garlic and 1 beet today.

The garlic was just because I was curious.  Will wait longer for the others.  This one is cute, a bulb, but small.

The beet is a little small but not bad.

Last beets

Harvested the last beets today.  Delicious steamed, with margarine and vinegar.  Will definitely grow them again next year.

Beet harvest

Harvested 3 beets today which had grown into a decent size, like small tennis balls.

Cooked them on the stove with some garlic and salt.  Not scrumptious, but certainly quite edible.

A few more beets remain.  Will let them keep growing as they're still small.
